Why Rove
When Spotlight can't find it and Finder takes forever, Rove lists the file in an instant.
Results as you type
Searches file names and paths; an index of millions of files answers in milliseconds. File contents are never read.
Everything’s search syntax
ext:pdf, size:>1gb, dm:today, path:, | for OR, ! for NOT — if you know Everything, you know Rove.
Your whole Mac
Not just your home folder: choose any folders to search, including Applications, other partitions and external disks.
USB and external drives
The index stays after you eject a drive, so you can still search it and see which disk a file is on; it updates when you plug the drive back in.
Native and light
A native macOS app with Dark Mode, Quick Look, drag and drop to Finder and full keyboard control.
Your data stays on your Mac
The index holds only names, sizes and dates, is kept on your Mac, and nothing is uploaded.
More when you need it
Features you don't use stay out of the way: they don't appear until you open them, and cost nothing.
NAS
Rove Agent on the NAS (Docker or a one-line script) makes the file list; your Mac only downloads it and never scans network shares. Search works even when the NAS is off.
Synology · QNAP · Unraid · any NAS that runs Docker
Search in plain words
Press ⌘K and write a sentence; AI turns it into a search you can check and edit in the search field. Use Apple Intelligence on your Mac, or your own OpenAI, DeepSeek or local model.
videos over 100 MB downloaded last week → path:~/Downloads/ video: size:>100mb dc:2026-10-12..2026-10-18
A command line for AI agents
Comes with the rove command and an MCP server: Claude Code, Codex and other AI agents search the same index and get JSON back in milliseconds.
$ rove search 'ext:swift !test' --json $ rove mcp # for Claude Code, Codex

FAQ
Does Rove read my files?
No. Rove records only the names, sizes and dates of files and folders to build its search index, and the index stays on your Mac.
Why does Rove ask for Full Disk Access?
By default macOS keeps apps out of folders such as Mail and Messages. With Full Disk Access, Rove can include them in its index; without it Rove still works and simply skips those places.
How do I add my NAS?
Install Rove Agent on the NAS (Docker on Synology, QNAP, Unraid and others, or a one-line script on other models) and pair it in Rove › Settings › NAS. The list is made on the NAS and your Mac only downloads it; to open a file, connect to its share in Finder.
How long is the beta free, and what does Rove cost after it?
The public beta is free through December 31, 2027, with every feature. After that, install the released version: a 14-day free trial, then a one-time purchase of US$14.99 for up to 3 of your own Macs. The index you built during the beta keeps working.
What happens when the trial ends, or I get a new Mac?
When the trial ends, searching stops but the index you built stays on your Mac; it is searchable again as soon as you activate a license key. For a new Mac, deactivate the old one in Settings › License or on the license page, then activate the new one.
Can I get a refund?
Yes — a full refund within 30 days of purchase, for any reason. See the Refund Policy.
